The Veruca In My Head

February 7, 2008

Dear Readers:

I am currently suffering writer’s block, due to a bad case of the blah’s.  I could write here about the cause or causes of my current funk, but I  know that even to begin to do so would unleash a long-winded pitty party complete with a sea of tears, so I won’t.  Instead, I will give you the following “fluff” post.

It seems like I’m always the last one to get the latest techonolgy.   I still have dial-up internet, and I still listen to/buy my music on CD’s.  For the past year, I’ve wanted an MP3 player.  I don’t really know why, there is no legitimate reason that I need one, but I want one nonetheless.

Most of my time at home is spent doing the 3 C’s, cooking, childcare or cleaning.  My family are TV junkies, so I rarely get to listen to music at home.  An MP3 player would be useless there.  Even with ear buds, I would have to increase the volume to excessive levels to be able to hear over the 2 televisions and bickering children in the house, risking my hearing, and quite possibly my children’s lives, as I wouldn’t be able to hear them in the event of an injury or emergency.

My time in the car is spent, for the most part, alone, where I am able to control the music.  When I do have passengers that don’t like my taste in music, I have a strict rule that goes like this, “make the payment and you can control the radio”.  The rarity of transporting passengers, along with my few passenger’s inablilty take me up on the payment offer pretty much makes an MP3 player useless there too.

In the rare event that I use my treadmill for something other than a clothes hanger, I use the DVD player to play my favorite Bon Jovi mix cd.  I’m usually the only one awake in the house, and the sound doesn’t bother anyone.   In the mornings when my mom and I walk, we talk, so I don’t need one for exercise.

Even though, factually, I do not need an MP3 player, I want one.  When I think about it, I feel a little like Veruca Salt from Willy Wonka, only instead of an oompa loompa, I want an iPod.  In my head, I picture a little girl in 70’s attire saying, in a whiny voice, “But daddy, I want an iPod now………”.  (yeah, I prefer the original Willy Wonka, I’m old school like that).

What’s worse is, I don’t just want one MP3 player, I’m convinced I need 2.  One for Bon Jovi music and one for everything else.  Through the wonder of ebay, I have tons of Bon Jovi music.  Of course, I have the regular albums, the ones you can throw in your shopping cart right by the bread and hair gel, but I also have much more than just those.  My extensive collection includes imports, rarities cover and holiday songs.  A quick internet search revealed nearly 700 different Bon Jovi songs, (699 to be exact) a few I’ve never heard of, but not most.  I own alot of them, and putting them on one MP3 player would leave little room for anything else.

When I hear something on the radio that I really like, I have the urge to go out and buy the thing just so I can download a particular song.  Sometimes it’s a new song, such as Gary Alan’s “Chasing Airplanes” (one of the writer’s is in Brad Cotter’s band) and Eric Church’s, “Sinners Like Me”, and sometimes it’s a song that takes me back to my youth.  It’s times like that when I have to remind my inner-Veruca that we don’t have that kind of money.

For now I’ll continue making my mental list when I hear songs on the radio, or on tv that I want to download onto my future MP3 player, and try to silence the Veruca in my head.

  1. How about just one mp3 player with a memory card slot? I have an mp3 player I keep forgetting to charge. arrrg.

Also – so funny! I wrote about Veruca Salt just a few weeks ago in my post entitled “collect them all” on my devotions blog. The short of it? Gratitude trumps Veruca!

And finally – TAG! I’ve tagged you for a meme: http://pragmaticcompendium.wordpress.com/2008/02/07/meme-4-things-about-me/

How cute… 🙂 It’s like a flash back to the nineties listening to tracks on the radio and hoping the DJ will tell you who the hell is singing because you love the song so much… and when he doesn’t you walk around town humming the damn thing all day convinced if you hum enough in the record store you will find it anyway… I’m sorry I will stop that now..

Yes two players… no three… one for everything, one for Bon Jovi and one for his ego.

    Did I just say that?

    Ok I am done.

@ Julie: Good idea. I’m so clueless on the whole MP3 player thing I didn’t even know they made things like that. I’ll have to check out the Veruca post, and the meme.

@ Paul: You crack me up. I suppose I am stuck in the 90’s, or maybe even earlier.

Since I enjoy your humor, I will ignore that last part, and chalk it up to your heterosexual male standing, as all straight men I know have a genetic inclination to bash Bon Jovi. It’s just the way you guys are wired I suppose.

Fun post! We have two mp3 players and we don’t use either of them. I don’t know why I even bought them, but I must admit to having a little iPod-envy when I see one. Retarded, eh?

Wow, you and the Jovi! Who knew how deep the river of your Jovi-love really ran? Haha….have you looked online? Price of MP3 players have gone way down (like you can get a 2GB-er (500 songs) for $30/$40…make your kids buy you one 😉 ) …but if you want the whole-iPod thingy, well that’s a little more pricey I suppose…

    PS: treadmill as a clothes hanger…hehe 😉

I’m very upset to think you have to endure a whole CD just to download one song, because I used to do this same thing until I learned how to buy the songs I wanted online for 99-cents. Are you able to do that with dial up or does the connection time out?

I have an Mp3 player that is so difficult to use. I can’t use it, really. It plays the same three songs over and over. I admit that I have iPod envy. iPods look easier. And they’re cute.

  7. Alyson Says:

@ Brian: I’m afraid that’s what will happen to me. I suppose we have just been brainwashed to think we need an iPod rather than the more sensible options. When I do get one, it probably won’t be an iPod, but I felt like a broken record saying MP3 over and over.

@ Romi: Oh yeah, it’s deep. Jovi & I go way back. I’m sure when I do get one it will be one of the less pricey options.

Glad you liked the treadmill joke. It’s true.

@ Wendy: I should’ve clarified that, I want to buy the MP3 player just so I can download the song. I rarely buy cd’s. I could download with the dial up, but it takes forever, which is why I refuse to get an MP3 player until I get DSL, and I refuse to get DSL until I get a new computer. It’s a vicious cycle.

I will probably bite the bullet and treat myself to all these things in August, when my oldest starts school, saving me a fortune in childcare.

I decided that I’m going to give you one of my mp3 players. Like I said, we have two and don’t use either of them. I’ll load it with as many BJ songs as I can find and you can pick it up. 🙂

  9. alyson Says:

OMG. You are amazing. I’m touched. You’re the best.

  10. […] Alan are awesome.  Not only did they give me an MP3 player, pre-loaded with awesome songs, they delivered it right to my door.  I am so […]

I knew it! I clicked on your link somewhere and thought….hmmm Jovi? If he knocked on my door I’m afraid my husband would be looking for me too. A mp3 player with only Bon Jovi is an interesting thought! 🙂

I’m afraid, in my case, it’s the only option. Did you see the Oprah that BJ was on a couple of years ago? Jon delivered a pizza to the home of a fan. I so wanted to be her.
